Friday, May 7, 2010 - Chemotherapy Today

Wow, I can't believe it has been a month since this all started with a trip to the emergency room and ended with a diagnosis of cancer. Joe had his third chemotherapy treatment today. I thought it was going to be the two medicines but I was incorrect, he only had one, the Vincristine. This medicine is much more tolerable and last week Joe had the same medicine and did not feel sick at all from it. It can cause some tingling in his hands and feet and make his body feel sluggish and heavy but he has not felt too much of that yet. Our visit to the H/O Clinic for treatment is always very nice despite having to do the treatment. Joe is getting used to the people and procedures and now knows what to expect, so it is not as scary. He is getting used to having his port accessed with the needle and he hardly flinches anymore. Everyone there is extremely nice and since it is a pediatric clinic there are lots of fun things for the kids. Today they had volunteers and Child Life Specialists there to help make games from specimen cups and syringes. They also had some guys come by to play guitars and sing songs with the kids. I almost felt like we had front row seats at our own private show. There is a lot of waiting associated with the blood tests, getting the results, visit with doctors, accessing the port, asking questions and administering the chemo - so these games are a great distraction for the kids. If Joe didn't have to be so careful with his activities due to his surgery, I wouldn't have really noticed much of a difference from his normal self this week. He is really bouncing back to his fun loving self and has a lot of life and personality in him. We are thankful and blessed that he is doing so well and everything is going according to plan. God, thank you for your protection and covering over Joe.

Praise God!! This post makes me think of the story of the 10 lepers. Luke 17:11-19 says, "Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, 'Jesus, Master, have pity on us!' When he saw them, he said, 'Go, show yourselves to the priests.' And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus' feet and thanked him - and he was a Samaritan. Jesus asked, 'Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? Was no one found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?' Then he said to him, 'Rise and go; your faith has made you well.'"
Thank you Liz, for being like the one who turned back to thank Jesus. I love the glory the Lord receives from your praise through this trial. I stand along side you with a thankful heart...thankful to the ONE who has given us the blessing of covering Joe and protecting him from the negative side effects of his treatments. Thank you, Jesus!!

Liz, your faith and strength in the Lord amazes me. I can see your sweet smile in Joe, and Kevin's eyes.
