April 12 - Update #6

Finally, we heard some news and saw the doctor. The doctor was very pleased with how the surgery went but it was long. The tumor was twice the size they expected...13 cm. They checked the lymph nodes and from appearance they looked good but we will have to await the pathology reports to be sure. The tumor was touching the liver so in addition to removing the kidney they had to remove a small portion of the liver. This caused a lot of bleeding but they did not have to give him blood. The doctor said the incision is going to be large...probably twice the size of my c-section scar. On his little body that must be pretty big. We are waiting for him to come to the room to see him. He will have an epideral which they will administer medicine throughout the night and keep him very comfortable. It looks like the first hurdle to overcome was this surgery and we feel it went well. Thankfully, God made us with two kidneys and he only needs one. He can also live without the little piece of liver that was removed. The next step will be to obtain the pathology reports in a few days which will show us the type of tumor, favorable or unfavorable. This wait will probably feel like a long time but we will have Joe by our side. Please keep praying for favorable results and confimation that it is indeed the Wilms Tumor. Thank you for the tremendous amount of support from everyone! We feel so loved and feel God's peace pouring over us during this time. We will write more tonight when Joe gets to the room and we see how he is doing.

Dear Turner Family-
We do not know you except from some time shared on the baseball field and basketball court. In this world, we're practically strangers. However, I can tell from reading your posts that we are brothers and sisters in Christ. So, that makes us family.
I have been praying all day for that sweet little boy, and asking all that I know to do the same.
You all are showing a strength that only our Lord could give. I can't fathom how you must be feeling.
We will continue to pray that our wants meet God's will for your sweet angel, Joe. God has a plan for all of you. What a blessing that you already know this!
God bless you all!

Ahh. So glad the surgery is over and that there were no major complictions! Now, time for some rest for Joe, Mom and Dad. Keep the epidural in for as long as possible. Early pain control is sooo important. Isn't it amazing how wonderfully our bodies are made? Two kidneys and a liver that will grow back! I'm praying for good results! Love ya lots!
